Freshwater West Beach is a very popular beach located on the south west coast of Pembrokeshire. It offers huge swathes of sand and being one of the best (if not the best) beach on which to surf.
The beach has exceptionally strong rip currents and so it is considered a place only for highly experienced surfers but also an ideal spot to watch them surf! The sand is golden and there is plenty of it as it curves around the horseshoe shape bay.

The gentle sand dunes that crouch behind the bay are considered too delicate for camping, parties or BBQs and so this is not allowed. Respect must be shown when near these important areas.
There are the ever-present rock pools at the far end of the beach, where there are also some quieter coves to explore.
The beach is known mostly for its surfers who come here to catch the best waves. These surfing conditions are great for them but dangerous for general bathers and so swimming is not advised here.
The beach has featured on the big screen being used in both Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood and Harry Potter.
In peak season there is a well-regarded refreshments van on the car park, near the beach.
There are two small free car parks but during the summer or high surf, parking can be hard to find here. (SA71 5AH)
Toilets are located near the southern end car park.
There is a lifeguard service here from late June until early September.
The easiest point of access is from the car park by the toilets. Here there is a concrete ramp or some steps. The northern carpark is a slightly longer walk through the sand dunes, and likely not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Dogs are allowed all year.
