Porthmelgan beach is a lovely, quiet cove that doesn’t attract the crowds associated with nearby Whitesands.
It’s mainly a boulder and pebble beach at higher tides, but low tide reveals a beautiful sandy bay. It is surrounded by high cliffs, which offer plentiful protection from any high winds.

It is only accessed via the Coast Path and ultimately only at low tides, so a spot of homework before setting off is wise. If you get there when the tide is on the way out, you will find a quiet cove that offers sheltered waters and enough sand upon which to relax and explore.
There are plenty of rock pools and a sweep of sand. As this is one of the most westerly beaches, it is not a good beach for swimming given the strong currents. Many a ship has come to ruin on the rocks near here.
There are no facilities at all here. The nearest are along the Coast Path at Whitesands.
Access is via the Coast Path and so is considered inaccessible those in wheelchairs or with buggies.
There are no restrictions on dogs
